Last month, Bruce Springsteen's wife, Patti Scialfa, revealed that she had been diagnosed with cancer — multiple myeloma, which is a type of cancer that affects the bones and bone marrow.

But, in a first look at the upcoming ABC News special Backstage and Backstreets, set to air in the US this weekend, The Boss has shared an optimistic update on his wife.

Speaking to ABC's George Stephanopoulos, Bruce said of his wife when asked how she was doing, "She's doing good, we caught it early, which is important," adding, "It's a tough disease, it's very fatiguing."

As for why they chose now to reveal Patti's diagnosis, Bruce said of the decision, "She hadn't played in the band in a long time, and people, I don't think, knew why. 'Where's Patti?'"

Patti shared her cancer diagnosis in early September in the new documentary, Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.

She said, "This affects my immune system, so I have to be careful what I choose to do and where I choose to go."

She added, "Every once in a while, I come to a show or two and I can sing a few songs on stage, and that’s been a treat. That's the new normal for me right now, and I’m OK with that.
